Since coming to Australia, I’ve always had an issue with people mispronouncing names of friends and family. In the same vein, I would be quite anxious to get the foreign names I would come across. pronounced correctly. I was fortunate to have come across Forvo in that quest.
Forvo is a completely user driven database of words in an astounding 189 languages. Members contribute, both the words that they are uncertain about pronouncing, and they also record words they know. At last count they had about 28,000 words already pronounced and about 50,000 words waiting for its correct enunciation. For a company with a pretty straightforward plan, “all the words in the world, pronounced”, it is a wonderful concept for utilizing the power of the social web. They have recently enabled a feature for Forvo members to swap messages and feedback. It sure feels wonderful to hear how, even in a small way, your pronunciation has helped someone in their relationships across the world.
